What is Juneteenth?

Juneteenth (Juneteenth National Independence Day) – short for June nineteenth – commemorates the day in 1865 when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas were finally informed of their freedom, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

It’s a celebration of freedom, heritage, and progress in the United States. Juneteenth became an official federal holiday in 2021.
