Presidents’ Day originally honored George Washington’s birthday but has since evolved to recognize all U.S. presidents, past and present.
The holiday was first established in 1879 as “Washington’s Birthday” and later became known as Presidents’ Day after the Uniform Monday Holiday Act that took effect on January 1, 1971.
