Want to transform your life and find more balance and meaning while being inspired? These are the personal development books to start with. They’re classics!
Personal development doesn’t have to be boring and difficult. It can be exciting, eye-opening and very entertaining. These are my favorite personal development books that I can read over and over a gain. They’re classics!
When it comes to personal development my motto has always been: “I read all the self-development books so my friends don’t have to.”
I’ve always loved reading and learning new hacks and techniques and some of my friends and even co-workers used to come to me when they had some problem that needed some clarity. They knew that I either had a solution from some awesome book or I would find it for them. And while doing that I read and re-read a lot of books from the personal development category.
But out of everything I’ve read, these 5 books are my all time favorites and I recommend them and quote them over and over again.
These 5 books are THE books to read if you’re starting your personal development journey, but they’re also THE books that you can read and re-read over and over again.
So here we go! The 5 personal development books of all time you should read first! (They’re not in any order, because they’re all just too good to compete with each other.)
Psst! I also made you a pretty printable so that you can start keeping track of all the books that you’re reading.
1. Who Moved My Cheese – Dr. Spencer Johnson
After reading this book you’ll never resist the change again. And I mean NEVER.
Way under 100 pages with pictures.
Fast-read. Fast results. Irresistible. Eye-opening. Fun.
And did I mention it’s about mice?

2. Ask and it is given – learning to manifest your desires – Ester Hicks
Wow! What a book.
I still haven’t complete finished it. And I started to read it a long time a go. It just takes me so long to digest.
But this is those kinds of books that you need to take your time with. Read a little. Think a little. Make some changes. Read a little and think a little and make some more changes. And continue… for the rest of your life.

3. The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari – Robin Sharma
Can’t be described has to be read to understand.
Deep. Mind-blowing.
Will. Transform. Your. Life. Trust me.
Btw. When I was first reading this I thought it was a story about a real person. Well, it wasn’t. How embarrassed was I to realize that? I had already been telling others about the book. But because of this book and its teachings, I feel so centered and self-accepting that I can share this (embarrassing) story here.

4. Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus – John Gray
This classic has saved my relationship and reunited me and my hubby numerous times.
The original and always entertaining.
Has an answer to all questions you’ll ever have about your relationship.
You just might not like the answers, but you’ll get over them after you see the results.
Note! I like to read this book without thinking so much that women are a certain way and men the other. Sometimes I find myself from the things that are for the Martians. And that’s ok.
The main point is to understand that you and your significant other might handle things differently and respect the other even though their choices and habits might be difficult to understand.

5. The Little Prince – Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
I don’t know if others consider this book a personal development book, but this book has changed me the most. And every time for the better.
This is THE book to take with you on a deserted island.
It has all the life lessons you’ll ever need, disguised in short simple stories.
This book needs to be digested for years. The layers are endless. And it WILL make you cry.
If books would be vegetables, this would be an ONION.

Which personal development book should you read first?
- I would always start with The Little Prince.
- If you are resisting change, or you have to deal with someone who is, then read about the mice and the cheese.
- If you want a better relationship with your significant other, then check out the Mars and Venus book (but remember to be open-minded.)
- And if you’re ready for your life to completely change, then go with Robin Sharma’s book.
- And after reading all those others you’re ready for the Ask and It Is given book.
With that said, those are just recommendations.
Any self-development book you pick up and read is great.
Because at that moment you’ve already started your personal growth journey.

My favorite is “What to say when you talk to yourself” by Shad Helmstetter.
Hi Katie!
Thank you for your comment! And thank you for sharing your favorite book! I haven’t read that book – What to say when you talk to yourself by Shad Helmstetter, but after checking it out I’ll need to put it on my love-to-read list immediately! It sounds like an AMAZING book!
I will definitely be adding these to my to-read list. I loved reading Girl, Wash Your Face and the sequel Girl, Stop Apologizing by Rachel Hollis. Great books for getting started in changing your mindset about not feeling good enough or if you need inspiration. I am currently reading You Can Heal Your Life by Louise Haye as well.
Hi Serena! Thank you for your comment! And yay! I’ve been wanting to find new inspiring books to read. I’ll be adding those books you mentioned to my reading list! Which one would you recommend to read first?
