How to keep track of credit card spending (in 5 steps)

Here are 5 steps that can help you keep track of your credit card spending.

Step 1: Keep a record of all your credit card purchases

The first step in tracking your credit card spending is to record all purchases made with the card – both online and in-store.

You can use a budgeting app that links to your credit card account and tracks your purchases using detailed spending reports.

But if you’re a pen-and-paper kind of person (like me) and want to track spending on paper, don’t worry! Our printable credit card spending tracker will keep you on track.

Step 2: Categorize your purchases

Next, it’s important to categorize your purchases to understand better where your money is going.

Doing so will also help you identify areas where you may be overspending.

Some typical categories for credit card purchases include groceries, dining out, entertainment, and transportation.

If you have several credit cards, here’s a tip: use each for certain purchases, like only using one for groceries and another for gas. It will make tracking your spending in each category easier and ensure you don’t overspend in one area.

Step 3: Set a budget for each category

Gaining insight into your spending habits is crucial. Once achieved, it’s vital to establish a budget tailored to your financial behavior.

A budget will help you stay on track and avoid overspending on your credit card. The 50/30/20 rule and zero-based budgeting are great, simple budgeting strategies.

Step 4: Check your credit card statements regularly

It’s essential to check your credit card statement regularly.

Doing so will help you catch any errors or fraudulent charges early on.

It also lets you see how much you’ve spent so far and how close you are to reaching your credit limit.

Step 5: Make a plan to pay off your balance

If you’ve spent more than you can afford on your credit card and struggle to make your debt payments on time, it’s important to make a plan to pay off your balance.

The plan needs to include how much you need to pay each month and when you plan on being debt-free. It should also include where you can cut back on unnecessary expenses and set up a schedule for your credit card payments.

Consider transferring your balance to a card with a lower interest rate to help save money on interest charges.

Remember, the longer you carry a balance on your credit card, the more interest you will have to pay.

Tips to use your credit card smartly

  1. (If possible) pay off your balance in full each month to avoid interest charges.
  2. If paying the balance is not possible, make minimum payments on all your credit cards to avoid late fees and damage to your credit score.
  3. If you have extra money left after making the minimum payments, put it towards the credit card with the highest interest rate first to save money in the long run.
  4. Set spending limits. Many credit card companies allow you to set spending limits for specific categories so you can spend your money wisely.
  5. Don’t rely on credit cards for everyday expenses.
  6. Only use your credit card for purchases you can pay off within a month.
  7. Avoid using your credit card for unnecessary purchases.
  8. Find patterns in your spending and adjust your budget accordingly.
  9. Set up automatic payments to ensure you never miss a payment.
  10. Sign up for transaction alerts to stay on top of your spending.
  11. Don’t max out your credit limit. If you do, it can negatively affect your credit score.
  12. Make achieving financial freedom a priority, and use your credit card wisely to avoid unnecessary debt.

How to keep track of spending with multiple credit cards

If you have multiple credit cards, it can be challenging to keep track of all your spending. Here are some tips to help you stay organized:

  • Keep a separate record for each credit card.
  • Use different categories for each card to easily see where your money is going.
  • If you have trouble paying off multiple cards, consider consolidating your debt onto one card with a lower interest rate.
  • Make sure you stay on top of payments for all your credit cards to avoid late fees and penalties.
