The Secret Santa Compliment Jar in a nutshell

You know the Secret Santa game where you buy a gift to someone, and they don’t know who they’re getting the gift from?

Well, the Secret Santa compliment jar is a bit like that but with a twist.

I’ve written more detailed instructions below, but the idea of the Secret Santa Compliment jar, in a nutshell, is that everyone in the family or in a group of friends or co-workers writes compliments to each other and no-one will know which compliment was given by whom.

The difference to the Secret Santa gift exchange is that everyone will try to write at least one compliment to everyone. So that way you end up writing, but also receiving (!) a lot of compliments and no-one will be left without any.

What is the Secret Santa compliment jar?

So the Secret Santa compliment jar is a bit like the Secret Santa gift exchange game. But with a twist.

Instead of buying and giving gifts, you write compliments. And instead of choosing just one person, you’ll write compliments to everyone or at least as many people as possible. In the end when everyone receives their compliments no-one will know who wrote which compliment to them.

The instructions for the Secret Santa compliment jar

Here are the detailed instructions for the Secret Santa Compliment Jar:

1. Cut regular or color paper into note sizes or print out a good amount of the Secret Santa Compliment Jar blank notes sheets at the end of this post and cut along the dotted line.

2. Ask everyone write compliments to each other. One compliment to one paper.

3. After you’ve written the compliment on the note, fold the paper so that no-one will see what you wrote.

4. Write the person’s name (to whom you wrote the compliment to) on the folded paper and put the folded paper in the Secret Santa compliment jar. (You can take any jar you have and add a label on it that says: Secret Santa Compliment Jar. Or use one of the labels you can download fro this post.)

5. After everyone has written all the compliments, they want to give or after a certain time has passed open the jar and give the compliments to each recipient (without opening the folded papers).

6. Everyone can read the compliments either there and then or later at home.

How to use the compliment jar with the family

You can have a Secret Santa compliment jar in your home and write compliments to your friends, family and loved ones.

You can have the jar in your home even for a few weeks and when there’s a good moment you can write compliments to your spouse, your kids, your parents or other friends, family and loved ones.

And the kids can write compliments to their parents, siblings, grandparents and other important people in their lives. They can even write a compliment to their beloved pet if they’d like to!

And if the kids are little, the other parent can help the kids to write the compliments to the other parent or grandparents and so on.

How to use the compliment jar with a group of friends

You can have a Secret Santa compliment jar with a group of friends.

Everyone can write compliments at home and bring them to the party where at some point the compliment jar will be opened.

Or the compliments can be written during the party, and at the end of the evening the compliment jar will be opened.

How to use a Secret Santa Compliment Jar with coworkers

You can have a Secret Santa compliment jar with your coworkers. The jar can be for example in the break room, and during a week or so everyone can write compliments to each other and put them in the jar and no-one will know which praise was given to them by whom.

NOTE:

You can write as many compliments you want to the same person, but it would be nice that everyone would write at least one compliment to everyone participating so that no-one will end up with zero compliments.

You’ll need to come up with the jar. If you don’t have a jar, don’t let it stop you. Any box will work too.
