History of Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day is a celebration honoring the mother of the family and motherhood and maternal bonds in general.

The modern version of Mother’s Day first arose in Europe during the 1600s in England, where a day known as “Mothering Sunday” was celebrated on the fourth Sunday of Lent.

The holiday was first celebrated in the United States in 1908 when Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her mother at Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church in Grafton, West Virginia (now known as International Mother’s Day Shrine).

In 1914, Mother’s Day was declared an official day of celebration by President Woodrow Wilson, and it has since become one of the most widely observed holidays in the United States.

Jarvis, who started Mother’s Day with Julia Ward Howe, also founded the Mother’s Day International Association to help promote the cause.

Jarvis didn’t approve the holiday’s commercialization and eventually opposed it and spent the rest of her life trying to remove it from the calendar.
